Thanks to some amazing promotions and very entertaining commercials PartyPoker quickly rose to become an industry leader in the early 2000s.
Then a certain law (UIGEA) was passed in the USA. PartyPoker was relegated to the rest of the world and had to settle for a much smaller slice of the pie.
Over the last few years, however, PartyPoker has revamped nearly every part of its software client and business model.
The new PartyPoker is a lean, mean, poker machine. The software is fast, accessible and much easier to play than some other sites thanks to an intuitive lobby and quick-start menu.
Once you’re playing you’ll have access to a very good selection of No-Limit Hold’em and PLO although you won’t have much in Seven-Card Stud, PLO8 or more obscure games.
PartyPoker doesn’t have quite as many options when it comes to game variety as some of its competitors but that’s what helps keep it so accessible.
As with many modern poker sites, PartyPoker has put more of an emphasis on recreational poker players, which is great for players just starting out.
Once you load up PartyPoker for the first time you’ll have access to instant welcome cash, very achievable “Get Started Missions” and more. The loyalty program is solid, too, with Bronze, Silver, Gold and Palladium levels that give you perks like free cash and tournament tickets.
One other thing: PartyPoker is one of the few online poker sites that has now successfully returned to the USA.
PartyPoker returned to the USA in 2014 when it opened up a New Jersey-facing site. That’s only the beginning, however, and PartyPoker would be welcomed back to many US States once legislation is implemented.
The newly launched partypoker LIVE series, which will see new partypoker Million and partypoker National events held in amazing locales around the world in 2017 and beyond, is another sign of big things to come again for the former #1 brand.
- Fast, streamlined software with Quick-Seat functionality
- Great promotions, especially instant sign-up bonuses
- Available for OSX, Windows and Android
- Easy-to-complete “Missions”
PartyPoker used to have some pretty clunky software despite its enviable position as the biggest online poker site in the world. While it can no longer claim the most poker traffic online, the software has improved immeasurably.
The new software is snappy, easy-to-use and available for a variety of devices including Windows-based computers, OSX-running Apple Computers and iPhone and Android on the mobile front.
In terms of games PartyPoker offers No-Limit Hold’em, Limit Hold’em, PLO, Omaha Hi-Lo and Seven-Card Stud. As is the case with most online poker sites it can be difficult to find a game in the lesser-played variants such as Seven-Card Stud or Omaha Hi-Lo.
PartyPoker also has FastForward Poker, which is a version of the fast-fold games that are all the rage these days. In FastForward Poker you can fold your hand and instantly get a new one at an entirely new table.
FastForward Poker is excellent for anyone that finds a standard game of poker a bit too slow.
In terms of features PartyPoker offers almost everything you’d expect from a top-tier site including extensive multi-tabling options, four-color decks and more.
It’s purely aesthetic but we like how the PartyPoker tables and cards look as well. Instead of the classic look the site offers a very modern-looking deck of cards and floating table.
One thing you won’t find on PartyPoker is any complicated 3D tables or avatars. It’s pure poker with no distractions.
PartyPoker has you covered for mobile devices whether you’re using iOS or Android. The mobile software works on iPhone, iPad and a plethora of Android smart phones and tablets.
The package itself is simple but gets the job done and you’ll instantly have access to cash games, FastForward Poker and a variety of Sit & Go’s.
FastForward Poker works really well on mobile because you can still play a lot of hands on just one table thanks to the fast-paced nature of the game.
Another great aspect is that you can still complete all your Missions or Challenges while playing on the mobile client.
One word of warning: The mobile PartyPoker app is limited to just No-Limit Hold’em. That means you won’t find any Pot-Limit Omaha or Seven-Card Stud.
It’s not exactly unheard of for online poker apps to be somewhat limited in terms of games offered (partially because of the smaller screen) but quite a few will at least have Pot-Limit Omaha.
PartyPoker remains a Top 10 poker site in terms of traffic. While not exactly the same as the glory days of the early 2000s, PartyPoker still packs in a considerable amount of players on its virtual tables.
As with most mid-range poker sites you’ll find a ton of micro- to small-stakes games but it can be tougher if you want to play something a bit bigger. Fortunately there’s plenty to keep you occupied on the lower end.
If you play on the NJ-facing PartyPoker site then you’ll be limited to only playing against fellow NJ-based players, which obviously limits the number of games that will be available.
PartyPoker really shines when it comes to tournaments and the site offers big online series on the regular.
One of the most popular tournament series on PartyPoker is the Power Series, which is based roughly on boxing with featherweight, middleweight and heavyweight divisions according to your buy-in level.
The Power Series offers 257 separate tournaments with $2.2 million in guarantees every week. If you’re into really big tournaments the Power Series Main Event will be right up your alley. It takes place every Sunday with a massive $150,000 GTD.
There’s also the even bigger PowerFest that runs every now and then with a gigantic $5m guarantee over nearly 100 events.
Of course PartyPoker isn’t just high-stakes multi-table tournaments. There are still tons of small-stakes MTTs and Sit & Go’s to play.
Satellites to win packages to the new partypoker Live events, headlined by the partypoker Million, are also great value. Low buy-in satellites for a penny can get you rolling into bigger events that can earn you full packages to play the bigger buy-in events.
Day 1s for all the major events are also available online before they move to live locations like Dusk Till Dawn card room in Nottingham or the Playground Poker Club in Montreal for Day 2 and beyond.
PartyPoker has always been one of the softer sites to play poker on and it remains so to this day. Although you probably won’t run into the ridiculously easy games that ran in the early 2000s, there are still some great spots to be had.
The site has always been all about attracting casual players and you’ll still find quite a few, partially thanks to its casino and sportsbetting offerings.
Quite often someone will have a big casino score and try their hand at poker. These are the games you want to be in.
As with any poker site competition tends to become quite a bit harder in the medium-stakes games. You can still find a weak player or two but you’re going to have to be more careful.
If you’re looking to improve your game than you’ll find some extremely skilled players in the high-stakes games.
Promos and Freerolls
PartyPoker has aggressively recruited new players for the past few years and there’s some tremendous value for such players as a result.
Once you sign up for an account at PartyPoker you’ll be greeted with a sizable sign-up bonus (depending on which site you use to sign up) and a package of tournament tickets and Get Started Missions.
PartyPoker Missions are simple challenges like “Win a Hand With Pocket Fives” or “Play Three Sit & Go’s in Three Days.” They aren’t too hard to complete and you’ll be rewarded with cold, hard cash directly in your account.
It’s actually pretty fun to play the various missions as you get to mix up your play a bit.
Finally PartyPoker has a small but growing number of freerolls that you can play with zero risk to your bankroll. It’s a great way to get started on the site.
One of the best things about the PartyPoker VIP program is just how simple it is compared to the very complicated ones on competitors’ sites.
Here’s how it works:
You earn points by playing real-money poker cash games or tournaments.
You rise through four status levels including Bronze, Silver, Gold and Palladium. You get perks like tournament tickets or cash based on your status level. You also earn more points depending on your status level.
Points can of course be spent on a variety of things in the PartyPoker store including tournaments tickets or PartyPoker merchandise.
