He's Done It! Mike Sexton Wins WPT Montreal for $425k!

The voice of the World Poker Tour now has a WPT title to call his own.

After near-misses at two previous final tables, Poker Hall of Famer Mike Sexton won his first career WPT title last night in Montreal.

He defeated WSOP Millionaire Maker winner Benny Chen heads-up - with a spectacular comeback no less - to earn $425k CDN but, more importantly, add a signature win to his illustrious resume.

Not just the WPT's announcer alongside Vince Van Patten for the past 14 years Sexton has a four-decade long list of cashes including a WSOP bracelet that now tally up to $6.2m.

Still, he'd yet to book a win on his home turf and that was finally accomplished last night.

An Icon Rewarded

The joy, if not the relief, was evident in Sexton's comments after the momentous win:

“What an absolutely incredible experience it is to become a WPT champion. A World Poker Tour title has eluded me until now, but luckily this old guy had a bit left in the tank to make another run at one, and it feels great to have closed the deal.

“I’ve come close two times before, reaching the final table at Bay 101 in 2011 and in Venice in 2013, so to get another shot and have it work out in my favor, it feels unimaginable ... I’m honored to join the WPT Champions Club alongside all of the great WPT champions we’ve crowned, and I am thrilled to get the opportunity to compete in the WPT Tournament of Champions at the end of the season.”

As Sexton mentioned his win not only secured him $425,980 but guaranteed him a seat in the $15k WPT World Championship this coming Spring. He'll also have his name engraved on the famed WPT trophy - one he's handed out so many times in his broadcasting career.

“Mike is an icon in the poker world," said Adam Pliska, CEO of the World Poker Tour, "and a true embodiment of a World Poker Tour champion. His contributions to the industry are unparalleled, and you will not find someone more passionate about the game than Mike.

"The WPT is honored to welcome Mike to the WPT Champions Club."
