How to Start Playing Online Poker

Getting started with online poker is a quick and easy process in most countries in the world. PokerRoomsOnline makes it even easier by providing reviews of the best online poker sites available to most people plus helpful hints and strategy for beginner poker players.

poker onlineFinding a decent online poker site to play at is easy enough, but you'll definitely want to shop around to get the most out of your experience.

Online poker sign-up bonuses, software, game selection and soft competition (how many "bad" players you're likely to find at the tables) are just a few of the variables you should consider. It's also important to find long-term value such as regular freerolls and additional loyalty bonuses.

The online poker sites listed on Poker Rooms Online excel in all of the above aspects. The poker sites have all been reviewed thoroughly by professional players and are known to offer good sign-up bonuses, lots of different games, and a high level of safety for your deposits and withdrawals.

Not all of the listed sites may be available in the country you reside in but most will be. And signing up for a new account is, usually, a process that online takes a few minutes.

Here's how it works:

  • Click the "Download Now" button from one of our review links and the poker site's software will download to your computer or device (You don't need to download the full software if you'd prefer not to - you can also download the mobile app (either for iPhone or Android) or play on the "no-download" version of the poker software available via a web browser)
  • Once the software has download you will be prompted to create a new account. You'll need to fill in a few personal details (name, age, address, email etc) and pick a username and password. This is how you will log in to your account to play and the name that will appear under your picture or avatar at the table.
  • Many poker sites (including all the sites we have listed at PokerRoomsOnline) offer a deposit match bonus or instant bonus when signing up. Be sure to enter the "promo code" as listed on our review pages in the appropriate field when signing up
  • If the site offers an instant bonus that money will appear immediately in your poker account and be available for play (but not withdrawal) according to the site's terms and conditions
  • If you'd like to play free online, once you have your username and account set up you're good to go. You can jump into "play money" games right away via the play-money lobby
  • If you want to play real-money online poker you'll likely need to make a deposit. This can be done in any number of ways, depending on the country you live in. In most places credit cards, debit cards, eWallets and bank transfers are all accepted
  • Click through to the "cashier" section of the poker site to see exactly what deposit methods are available to you
  • Once the funds are cleared into your online poker account (depending on your deposit method this could be instant or take 24-48 hours), you're free to play any of the poker games on offer as long as you have enough for the buy-in in your bankroll
  • All poker sites offer "microstakes' games where you can play for pennies. They also offer a wide range of games and tournaments in the $1-$10 range. In fact 90% of all online poker action takes place at the microstakes so if you have a limited budget you're in great company!
  • To see the selection of games on offer, navigate to the poker "lobby" and you'll see your multitude of options from cash games, mutli-table tournament, sit-& gos (single-table tournaments) to fast forward poker and more
  • Pick a game and tournament, click "buy-in" or "register" (for tournaments) and you'll be whisked to your first online poker table!

Online Poker for Free

As we mentioned above a lot of people get their feet wet in online poker by playing free games or tournaments. These can come in a variety of different forms.

On most online poker sites you can pick between "play money" and real money" games. Free, or play money games, are exactly that - free. You pay no money to play and are awarded chips of no monetary value. You can use them to "buy" into games and tournaments, though, and get used to the speed and controls used to play online poker.

free online pokerThis is a great place to start. The strategy in these games isn't quite the same as it is in real-money poker but you do learn quite a bit and get comfortable with using the unique online poker controls like your bet slider, the time clock, how play moves around the table and so on.

If you do well in the play-money games you also win more play money chips you can use to enter more play-money games and tournaments. Winning a huge play money tournament and banking a million play chips doesn't help your real bottom line but it can definitely boost your confidence - and make you hungry to get in the action for the real money.

A Word About Freerolls

Online poker sites also offer what are called "freerolls" to both new and current players. A freeroll requires no actual money to buy-in but pays out in real-money cash or prizes!

The average freeroll you find offered on a poker site has a prize pool of $200-$500 and will pay the top 10% of the field a share of that. These are an amazing opportunity for new poker players to get REAL actual dollars they can use to play poker with.

Players who open new accounts at poker sites are usually given a few free tickets to play in these events as are players who make new deposits at any time. Some of these freerolls can have prize pools of $1,000 and more so they're worth taking advantage of.

PokerStars, for example, even had four $1m freerolls in a single year - so keep your eyes open for the chance to play online poker for free but win for real!

Online Poker for Real Money

The nest step after trying out free online poker is taking a shot at some real-money online poker. As we mentioned above, though, real-money poker doesn't have to be for sweat-inducing stakes. In fact 95% of all online poker games are played well below $10. That means all tournaments, cash games, Sit & Gos, etc.

The high-stakes pros who buy in for thousands of dollars and battle for millions naturally get all the headlines and attention but online poker is really a very, very accessible hobby for virtually everyone in the world. Booming poker communities in India, China and Brazil are perfect examples.

online poker usaYou can literally play real-money online pennies with stakes of 1c/2c being the lowest. Most tournaments cost between $1 and $11 to buy-in and are an unmatched opportunity to turn you tiny poker bankroll into a big one.

It's also a very simple way to mitigate any losses. You know exactly how much it'll cost you to play and, if you outlast a good portion of the field, you'll make a profit on your investment.

If you're just getting started in real-money poker we recommend playing only the microstakes cash games or low-stakes tournaments. The general rule of thumb for playing online poker is "never risk any money you can't afford to lose" but the more specific rules is never have more than 10% of your total bankroll on the table at any time - either for a cash game or tournament.

Poker pro Chris "Jesus" Ferguson even did a famous online poker challenge where he started with $0 and turned it into $10,000 sticking to that exact principal - never having more than 10% of his money on the table at any time.

It's a long haul to work your way all the way up to the high stakes in poker that way but, for most of us, it's the best way to ensure our online poker experience is a fun, exciting and non-stressful long-term experience.

How to Make a Poker Deposit

If you are going to play online poker for real money you will need to find a way to make a deposit into your online poker account. As mentioned this depends on which country you live in but in many places - the UK, certain US states, much of Europe and Asia - this is as simple as using your credit card or debit card as you would any online transaction.

eWallets like Neteller and Skrill, where you deposit money from a credit card or debit card into those accounts and then transfer to your online poker account instantly, are also very common, popular and convenient options.

"Old school" ways of transferring money like Western Union, eCheques or bank wires are also accepted but typically take a bit of time to clear. Mostly, though, online poker sites go out of their way to make depositing funds into your online poker account as quick and seamless as possible so you can get straight to enjoying the games at the tables.

Online Poker in the USA

As mentioned there are different rules and regulations for online poker depending on where you live and the United States of America is no exception. In fact, it might even be one of the worst place to live (at least right now) to play online poker.

USA poker onlineA short history: Online poker really took off in the US in the early 2000s and early online poker sites like Party Poker, PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, Absolute Poker, Ultimate Bet Poker, Paradise Poker and more offered hundreds of games and millions of dollars in prizes daily.

All of the global poker player pool was united as one and Americans could sit down and log in and play all day and all night against anyone in the world.

In the fall of 2006, however, President George Bush passed the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) attached to an unrelated port security bill and everything changed dramatically after that.

It didn't make online poker illegal in the US - in fact online poker never has been illegal and isn't right now - but it did make it illegal for banks to process deposits and withdrawals for online poker sites.

UK poker sites like Party Poker, William Hill Poker, Betfair Poker and the like (all licensed and regulated in the UK and traded on the London Stock Exchange) immediately withdrew from the US market because of the legal uncertainly. Sites like PokerStars, Full Tilt and Absolute chose to stay and offer games to US players on the advice of their lawyers.

In 2001, though, that decision came home to roost and the owners of those sites were indicted by the DOJ and the sites shut down. Player funds were also seized although they were returned to all players by the government in recent years.

Where that leaves the US poker market now, however, is in a state of limbo. Three states (New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware) have now legalized and licensed their own poker sites but you must live in (or be within state borders) to play on them.

Other states like Pennsylvania, California and New York are working on legislation to join them but the process is slow going. So there is no nationwide US online poker at the moment. But, we hope, that will change in the coming years.

Online Poker Games

As we mentioned above there are dozens and dozens of different poker games you can access online. From cash games to shorthanded games to heads-up to tournaments to bad beat jackpots and SnGs, the diversity in online poker has never been greater.

If you're an old schooler and prefer a lazy round of 5-Card Draw, that's there for you to. Not all poker sites offer all the different game options, though, so if you have one particular game in mind you want to play it's best to check if the site offers it before you sign up and make a deposit.
